NFL Playoff Action Good for Vegas Books

Pittsburgh's upset of Indianapolis coupled with Denver's disposal of two-time defending Super Bowl champion New England proved to be a knockout blow to the public over the weekend, sending many parlays and teasers tumbling along with futures tickets.

Last week, Stardust Race and Sports Director Bob Scucci forecast a New England-Carolina Super Bowl to the Professional Handicappers League, believing heavy favorite Indianapolis would stumble on the road to Motown, site of the NFL's 2006 showcase.

Monday, Scucci crowed to the Las Vegas Review-Jounal, "If I felt there was a time for the Colts to be ripe for the picking, it was this game, and I said it before the game."

Patrick Daugherty, a Stardust night shift supervisor, and Robert Jaynes, the Stratosphere Tower's race and sports director, agreed bet shops enjoyed a better Saturday than Sunday, which wasn't chopped liver either.

"A lot of teasers were blown with Indy," Daugherty declared, referring to Pittsburgh's stunning 21-18 victory over the Colts that eliminated them from Super Bowl XL contention.

"We had some run over, but it knocked out others," Jaynes said.

Jaynes added that the number was so elevated "educated players" considered it "way too much."

"Some places had it as high as Indy minus 10," he declared. "We opened at 9 1/2 and went down to 8 1/2."

Jaynes revealed the Stratosphere took a "giant" wager -- mingled with many smaller ones --on Indy earlier in the season, when the Colts were 3 1/2 to 1 to win the Super Bowl.

Carolina's 29-21 downing of Chicago was bad news for folks holding Bears futures, as well as bookmakers, who saw early bucks on the Bears but more late ones on the Panthers.

"The public and wise guys both liked Carolina," Daugherty noted. "We went from 3 to 2 1/2.

"Where we did well was with the total."

The 'Dust opened the over/under at 31 1/2, the number dropped to 30 1/2 and went off at 31.

"People were betting the under," Daugherty noted.

The Stratosphere total bounced between 30 and 32, going off at 31.

"The over/under wasn't what did it to us," Jaynes said. "It was the money line and points."

The Seattle-Washington NFC matchup was either a barnburner or sister-kisser, depending on what number you bought -- again highlighting the importance of shopping around for that extra half-point.

The NFC champion Seahawks won 20-10.

"Seattle was bad," Daugherty said succinctly.

"Either you got a small win or a push," Jaynes observed from behind the counter.

Saturday's blockbuster was the Broncos.

"Early money was on the Pats, but we started to see more and more parlay money on Denver as the day went on," Jaynes said.

Stratosphere players were all over the Panthers, so much so that the number slid all the way to Bears minus 2.

"People were saying they thought we had the wrong favorite listed," Jaynes continued. "We went all the way to 2, though some places had it at 3 and even 3 1/2."

Daugherty acknowledged futures liability pretty much dissipated over the weekend.

Some stores had jeopardy on the Bears, others on the Redskins. Chicago opened as high as 100/1 in some futures books.

A number of stores still are out on a limb with the Panthers.

"We'll be rooting against Carolina," Daugherty said, presumably because the Stardust would clear less on the Panthers than with the other three survivors.

The Stratosphere opened Seattle at minus 4 1/2 and the number quickly fell to 4. Denver was posted as a flat 3-point favorite and by Monday afternoon the Broncos were minus 3, minus $1.30.

"Why move the number when you can just raise the price?" Jaynes asked.

Originally produced for HBO Television, this comedy special leaves no doubt that Jamie Foxx is at the top of his game!

Pride FC

Pride FC
Pride FC pits the top fighters in the world from several disciplines--including wrestling, karate, judo, and kickboxing--into one ring. The philosophy of Pride, known as Vale Tudo, is the acceptance of any technique from any school of combat. Pride FC is a realistic representation of this mixed martial arts approach: fighters are accurately presented in detail, with close attention to appearance, fighting style, movements, and signature ring entrances. Various combat elements including multiple fighting positions, unique fighting styles, and hundreds of moves, counters, and reversals capture the intensity of a real Pride contest. With a TV-style presentation, each matchup comes to life in fully scaled arenas complete with ring announcers, lighting, pyrotechnics, and realistic camera angles.

Customer Review: Me

Firstly, I am an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) guru. I've been watching it for years, and I've had this game since it's release day. I just joined on Amazon, so I'm just now reviewing the game.

This game is much better than the UFC games that are out. The UFC games seem to have too much inconsitency in its fights. A stand-up striker should not be able to submit a submission master within 10 seconds (50 seconds their time) in every fight. Every UFC game is simple, no challenge. Pride FC is more realistic in the fighting aspect. There is a wide variety of moves, animations, and quality fighters. Pride has the best fighters in the world, and this game provides all of the ones from a few years ago. Most importantly, Vanderlei Silva is present.

The graphics are decent. The bodies look like they're made mostly of plastic, which is bothersome when looking at the screen. The faces are well done, they just look like they're mounted on top of a plastic sheet.

The gameplay is done really well. Most matches will not end within a few seconds. They can, but most likely will not. Most of the important fight positions are available. Stand-up, stand-up clinch, mount, back-mount, and guard are available. One position that UFC Sudden Impact has over Pride is the side-mount. That could have been very beneficial in the Pride game. Still, what is in the game is good enough to enjoy.

Besides the plastic look, there are a couple of other aspects of the game that annoy me. #1 is the extremely loud bomb-like sound effect. When someone punches or kicks their opponent, it literally sounds like a bomb exploded on the impact. #2 is the lack of a career mode of any type. You can create fighters (up to 12 per memory card, I believe), and make them good from conception. There is a tournament mode, which is VERY well done. The fighter entrances are spot-on with the real-life counterparts. The crowd can be somewhat dull during them, but the presentation of the real events is still there. But, other than the tournament and exhibition modes, the game really lacks depth. That is why I rate it as a 3 overall. #3 Why do the UFC and Pride games have extremely accelerated clocks? The makers of the games refuse to give us real-time fights. Even when you put the round time to 15 minutes, it's only about 3 or 4 in real-time. This needs to be fixed with future MMA games. If they didn't make strikes do so much damage, the energy bars would not drain so quickly. Also, the grappling and submission systems could be better done. If something like the WWE Smackdown games were implemented for these areas, the fights could be much more entertaining. Give us a meter where you must place an indicator into the correct position. The better a fighter is at submissions, the bigger the target and the slower the indicator moves. If a player is worse at them, do the opposite. It's not that hard to figure out.

Multiplayer is very fun, as long as you play against somebody who knows how to play the game. If you can get somebody to play with you, the game is more enjoyable that way.

In the end, the fights are realistic, the overall presentation is well done, and Pride FC is an entertaining game (especially multi-player). But, the lack of depth brings the enjoyment level and replayability down. The next time an MMA game is created, a DECENT career mode should be created. So far, they have either been TERRIBLE, or non-existent.

Customer Review: Pretty bad game.... yet somewhat addictive

There is one thing wrong with this game.... it takes all of about 10 seconds to win a match. The game goes by WAY too fast. And just like the guy above, the Grand Prix thing I beat about 4 times on the hardest difficulty on the first day... this game just isn't challenging. I am yet to play the UFC games (which was what I wanted in the first place), but I'm sure they have this game beat by a long shot.

Customer Review: Heavenly!

This was a Christmas gift for my husband. He says its one of his best gifts ever; every evening he looks forward to "rewarding" himself with one of these chocolates.

Customer Review: Makes a great present!

I recently bought this item for a friend whom I rarely get to see because we live far away from one another. Her birthday was coming right up, and I found out from another friend that she loved dark chocolate. Amazon.com shipped the item very quickly. I had been contemplating sending the item with expedited service, but ended up assuming my friend wouldn't care one way or the other if the item arrived on time for her birthday. In fact, the item showed up just two days later, ON TIME for her birthday, when I had just paid for standard delivery. My friend immediately sent me a very excited e-mail thanking me for the present, and said that she loved it. Thanks, amazon!

Black Hawk Down [Blu-ray]

Black Hawk Down [Blu-ray]
Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down conveys the raw, chaotic urgency of ground-force battle in a worst-case scenario. With exacting detail, the film re-creates the American siege of the Somalian city of Mogadishu in October 1993, when a 45-minute mission turned into a 16-hour ordeal of bloody urban warfare. Helicopter-borne U.S. Rangers were assigned to capture key lieutenants of Somali warlord Muhammad Farrah Aidid, but when two Black Hawk choppers were felled by rocket-propelled grenades, the U.S. soldiers were forced to fend for themselves in the battle-torn streets of Mogadishu, attacked from all sides by armed Aidid supporters. Based on author Mark Bowden's bestselling account of the battle, Scott's riveting, action-packed film follows a sharp ensemble cast in some of the most authentic battle sequences ever filmed. The loss of 18 soldiers turned American opinion against further involvement in Somalia, but Black Hawk Down makes it clear that the men involved were undeniably heroic. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Review: Blackhawk Down

This vdeo gives two views of the story from Somalia, Africa. The book was written by Mark Bowen, of which the story is based on. The us Soldiers fought with honor and courage in a no win situation, in the middle of the city of Mogandishu, Somalia.

Customer Review: Wow!

fast service... good condition.... great price!!!!!!!!!!!

Customer Review: dan s from merrick ny

this is probably one of the funniest movies i've ever seen. It was really stupid, on the other hand. I would reccomend this movie to everyon who likes family guy. If you're under 17 youre parents probably won't want you to have it, because it is uncensored. You can turn the censors on. (once youre parents trust you, you should watch the unrated version.)

But his incredible journey leads him to discoveries far more vile and shocking that anything found in his diaper.

this is probably one of the funniest movies i've ever seen. It was really stupid, on the other hand. I would reccomend this movie to everyon who likes family guy. If you're under 17 youre parents probably won't want you to have it, because it is uncensored. You can turn the censors on. (once youre parents trust you, you should watch the unrated version.)
